Issue/Introduction

When attempting to reset a Virtual machine CPU usage alarm the user recieves an error message pop up that says "Operation failed! Permission to perform this operation was denied.  You do not hold privileges "Alarm.text alarm-5 : [Alarms >Set alarm status]""

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 8.x

Cause

The user does not have Alarm > Acknowledge Alarm and Alarm > Set Alarm Status privileges on the vCenter level of permissions.

Resolution

  1. Create a role or add to an existing role that will be used to grant the user privileges at the vCenter level. The role should have these privileges:
    • Alarm > Acknowledge Alarm
    • Alarm > Set Alarm Status
  2. Apply the role to the vCenter Server level.
IMPORTANT: Ensure Propagate to children is unchecked.
