Issue/Introduction

The VM fails to find the guest OS and defaults to a Network boot.

 

Environment

ESXi 8.x

Cause

The boot order of the VM guest OS can change when disk.EnableUUID is set to TRUE, and the top of the boot list will no longer be pointing to the boot disk.

Resolution

Requirement: disk.EnableUUID must be set to TRUE for both nodes, which can cause the guest OS disk order to change and have the wrong boot disk in the BIOS:

 

Follow the kb  Configuring the boot order for a virtual machine

Configuring the boot order for a virtual machine with on ESXi 6.x / 7.0 or 8.0 using the using the BIOS boot manager:
Shut down the virtual machine.

  • Click the virtual machine in the Inventory.
  • Right click Edit Settings.
  • In the Virtual Machine Properties dialog, click the VM Options tab.
  • Under Boot Options, select the check box for Force BIOS setup.
  • Click OK to save the changes.
  • Power on the virtual machine
  • Open a VM console and navigate to the BIOS > Boot section
  • Select the correct boot order selection and save
