"Customization is not enabled for this virtual machine" when powering on VM with "Power On, Force Recustomization"

Issue/Introduction

When attempting to power on or customize a Virtual Machine within VMware Cloud Director (VCD), the task fails.

Symptoms:

• VCD UI displays the error: "Customization is not enabled for this virtual machine."

Environment

10.x

Cause

Customization State: The "Enable Guest Customization" flag is disabled at the VM level.

Resolution

 

• Enable Guest Customization:

  1. In the VCD Tenant Portal, go to Virtual Machines.

  2. Select the affected VM and navigate to Guest OS Customization > Edit.

  3. Check the box for Enable guest customization.

• Trigger Re-customization:

  1. Power on the VM using the Power On and Force Customization option.
