Issue/Introduction

  • You are upgrading form NSX 3.X to 4.X.
  • An NSX upgrade precheck to 4.x failed due to the presence of Transport Node Profiles configured with  N-VDS switches as below:

  • Error Message:

There are X Transport Node Profiles configured with N-VDS switches. N-VDS is not supported starting NSX 4.0. Please delete/edit these Transport Node Profiles

before proceeding to upgrade. List of Transport Node Profiles having N-VDS:XXXXXXXXXXXXXX.
  • This precheck error is identified as a component level issue that acts as a blocker to the NSX upgrade to 4.x.

Environment

VMware NSX

Cause

  • Support for N-VDS has been removed starting with the release of NSX 4.0.

  • Detected that existing transport node profiles in the upgrade precheck still reference the deprecated N-VDS.

Resolution

Resolution

  • Please delete or edit any transport node profiles that contain N-VDS configurations.

  • Verify that zero clusters are attached to the TNP before attempting deletion to avoid dependency errors:

    The UI Navigation Path

    1. Log in to the NSX Manager UI as admin

    2. Select the System tab from the top navigation bar.

    3. On the left-hand pane, look under the Fabric section.

    4. Click on Hosts.

    5. In the main window, select the Transport Node Profiles tab

    6. Make sure that 0 Applied clusters are utilizing the TNP as shown below.
  • If your environment still utilizes N-VDS on your transport nodes, you should perform a migration to VDS following Migrate Host Switch to vSphere Distributed Switch – NSX-T Administration Guide

  • Upgrade precheck must be re-executed after the n-vds references are cleared from the NSX Manager.
