Virtual machine disks consolidation failed due to backup software configuration

Issue/Introduction

• vCenter Event "Virtual machine VM_NAME disks consolidation failed on ESX_HOSTNAME in cluster CLUSTER_NAME in DC_NAME" occurred.
• During the consolidation, vmware.log shows "Failed to lock the file" for the VM disks.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESX 7.x

Cause

The backup software has been configured to perform duplicate backups for the target virtual machine.

Resolution

Change the backup configuration.
