Monitor virtual disk storage latency for VMs using esxtop

Issue/Introduction

This article describes how to use esxtop to monitor storage I/O latency for each VMDK of a specific virtual machine.

Resolution

The I/O latency of each VMDK for the VM can be monitored by following the steps below.

1. Use SSH to connect to the ESXi host.
2. Run the following command:
   
esxtop


3. Press v to switch to the virtual machine view. The output displays the GID for each VM.
4. Press e to to enter the GID filter
5. Type the GID of the target virtual machine and press Enter to display storage I/O latency statistics for each attached VMDK.
