Issue/Introduction

During a Virtual-to-Virtual (V2V) conversion using VMware vCenter Converter Standalone, the conversion process may fail with the following error message:

Failed: A file I/O error occurred while accessing.

This issue typically occurs when the conversion is initiated from a remote machine that does not have direct access to the destination ESXi server.

Environment

VMware vCenter Converter Standalone

Cause

The failure is caused by the lack of direct connectivity between the remote machine running the Converter Standalone client and the destination ESXi host.

When the Converter client does not have direct access, the traffic cannot reach the ESXi server correctly, resulting in file I/O errors during the conversion process.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, enable Proxy Mode during the V2V conversion process:

        1. In the VMware vCenter Converter Standalone wizard, navigate to the Destination

        2. Select the option Use proxy mode.

        3. Proxy mode ensures that all data traffic is routed through the Converter Standalone Server machine, allowing proper communication with the destination ESXi host.

Additional Information

For detailed steps on configuring proxy mode and selecting a managed destination, please refer to the official Broadcom documentation:
