VMware vCenter Server

Issue/Introduction

  • Host will not enter to maintenance mode and will get stuck at 19% when the task has been initiated by AD user on the vCenter.
  • Host will not show any VMs when checked from the vCenter UI logged in using AD user.
  • Error message on the vCenter UI-
'Waiting for all VMs to be powered off or suspended or migrated. In a DRS cluster check the Faults page on the DRS tab for troubleshooting'.
  • No affinity rules, no DRS errors and no host error will be observed.
  • However, when logged in using sso admin, for example  [email protected] , vCLS vm will show as residing on the affected host.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 8.x

Cause

The AD user  logged into the vSphere Client was not part of the Administrator group. vCLS (vSphere Cluster Services) VMs are background virtual machines that operate behind the scenes on a VMware cluster.  The vCLS VMs are only visible to users who are part of the Administrator group. If a user is not a member of this group, they won’t be able to see the vCLS VMs, even though the VMs are running correctly in the background.

Resolution

Perform the maintenance mode task using sso admin, for example , [email protected]

OR

Add the user as a part of Administrator group to have access on vCLS VM and cancel and re-initiate the maintenance mode task. Follow the steps below to add the required user to the Administrator group:

  • Log in to the vSphere Client and navigate to Menu.

  • Select Administration under the Menu options.

  • In the Single Sign-On section, click on Users and Groups and then on Groups.

  • Select the Administrator group and click Edit.

  • Add the user who needs to manage and monitor the vCLS VMs.
