VMware vCenter Server VMware vSphere ESXi

Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • Multiple VM's across all the ESXi hosts impacted.
  • From ESXi side, no VM related issues identified.
  • VM's are in powered on state but accessible on network:

  • All the VM's on Nutanix datastore are impacted, irrespective of the OS type.
  • Attempting to access the VM via console, throw a blank screen.

Environment

VMware vSphere 8.x

Cause

The Nutanix CVM entered an error state due to one of its core services, Stargate, being down, which caused virtual machines to lose storage access.

Resolution

Verify no issues seen at the ESXi layer.

Contact Nutanix vendor to restart the CVM, which will restart the Stargate service.

Post restarting the Nutanix CVM, "Reset" the impacted VM's and the VM's will be accessible on the network again.

Additional Information

Nutanix CVM: The Nutanix Controller Virtual Machine (CVM) is a specialized, Linux-based virtual machine that runs on every node in a Nutanix cluster. It serves as the "brain" of the Nutanix software-defined storage, running the Acropolis Operating System (AOS) to handle all I/O, management, data reduction, and replication tasks.

Stargate: The Stargate service on Nutanix acts as the primary I/O manager and data path interface between user Virtual Machines (VMs) and the physical storage devices. It is responsible for handling all storage-related I/O requests (NFS, iSCSI, SMB) and ensuring data consistency across the cluster.
