Issue/Introduction

During an upgrade of a VCF environment to version 5.2.2, the NSX upgrade step fails with the following error:

“Scheduling immediate update of bundle failed. Invalid upgrade spec, NSX upgrade request contains NSX Manager <NSX-Manager> with status DEGRADED.”

Upon reviewing the NSX Manager cluster status, one or more NSX Manager nodes are observed to have services in a DOWN state, causing the cluster to report a DEGRADED status and preventing the NSX upgrade from proceeding.

Environment

VMware NSX 4.2.1.0

Cause

The NSX Management Cluster must be in a STABLE state before upgrade operations can proceed. If the cluster is not stable, upgrade workflows cannot be initiated for the affected components.

Resolution

Workaround:

Reboot each affected NSX Manager showing a DOWN status for any services (based on get cluster status), performing the reboots one node at a time.

After each reboot cycle, verify the Manager cluster reports STABLE, and once all nodes are healthy, proceed with rerunning the prechecks and initiating the upgrade through VCF.
