VM Backups are failing with the following error: "Could not find [Tag] [VIP-Backup-ICP2-*] to discover virtual machines"

Issue/Introduction

• Backup server uses tagging to discover and list the inventory of Vms from vCenter server.
• While using rule to filter VMs with tag starts with VIP-Backup-ICP2-*] and ends with production , it is failing to discover VMs.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 8.x

Cause

• Tagging does not support regular expression/wildcard matching.
• We cannot work with " tag starts with VIP-Backup-ICP2-*" queries with tagging service.
• Wildcard certificates are not supported in vCenter
• vCenter would not recognise the component with wildcard certificate
• vCenter issues a certificate to the host for secure communication
   

Resolution

• Contact the vendor to generate new certificate
• vCenter requires that the certificate's common name or a subject alternative name (SAN) must exactly match the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) of the vCenter Server.
