VMware vSphere ESX 8.x

Issue/Introduction

the below error is received while editing network adaptor to the VM

Environment

VMware ESXi 8.0

Cause

  • Standard (non-ephemeral) Distributed Virtual Port Groups are managed exclusively by vCenter. Modifying these connections directly on an ESXi host is not supported by design.
  • VMs will not be able to be reconfigured to static (also known as non-ephemeral) port groups on the Distributed switch because vCenter is unavailable(from ESXi host direct Access) to give the VM a port binding. In this instance, the user will see the following error  "Addition or reconfiguration of network adapters attached to non-ephemeral distributed virtual port groups is not supported."

Resolution

this is the expected functional behavior for Distributed Virtual Switches (DVS), The workaround for these is to login to vcenter and edit the VM setting to change the portgroup,
