Issue/Introduction

  • During a VMware vSphere Foundation (VVF) 9  deployment fails during pre-checks with errors indicating that no valid clusters are detected. The deployment workflow is unable to identify a cluster that meets the required criteria.
  • We get the below error:
Vsphere vsphere : The number of resources matching definition 'Base Cluster' is incorrect. Count 0

Environment

VMware vSphere Foundation 9.x

Cause

This issue occurs when the target vCenter Server environment does not contain a cluster that satisfies the minimum resource and configuration requirements for the VVF deployment profile. Specifically:

  • The deployment workflow cannot find a pre-existing cluster to map to the "Base Cluster" definition.
  • Hosts may exist in the inventory as standalone hosts rather than being grouped into a Cluster object.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, ensure the target vCenter inventory includes a valid cluster with sufficient resources before retrying the validation. For architecture and connectivity guidelines, refer to  Fibre Channel Design Elements for VMware Cloud Foundation .

Follow the below steps to prepare your environment:

  1. Create a Cluster - In vCenter Server, create a new cluster.  For detailed instructions, refer How Do You Create a vSphere Cluster with the vSphere Client
  2. Add Hosts to the Cluster - Move all ESXi hosts into the newly created cluster.
  3. Ensure the Fibre Channel (VMFS_FC) datastore is correctly mounted and accessible on all hosts in the cluster before proceeding.
  4. Restart the deployment validation workflow.

The cluster should now be detected correctly, and the deployment will proceed without "Base Cluster" definition errors.
