Issue/Introduction

  • Existing ESXi hosts physically moved and connected to new ports on upstream physical switches.
  • ESXi Management vmkernel is reachable on a VLAN backed port group on the NSX switch. (Other vmkernel services like vMotion, vSAN, etc. are also working on VLAN backed port groups)
  • vmkping from TEP vmkernels (vmk10/11) are unable to reach TEPs on any other host or Edge transport nodes.

Environment

  • VMware NSX

Cause

Other services on VLAN backed port groups working indicates that there is a missing VLAN in the trunk ports on the upstream physical switch stack.

Resolution

Check that the "Transport VLAN" in the Uplink Profile used by these hosts in NSX (System > Fabric > Profiles > Uplink Profiles) is included in the trunk configuration on the upstream physical switch ports connected to the ESXi host.
