Issue/Introduction

After upgrading an ESXi host, you see the following error when attempting to add it to a new vCenter:

An error occurred while communicating with the remote host. Network configuration change disconnected the host '##.##.##.##' from vCenter server and has been rolled back. Cause: A change in the network configuration disconnected the host '##.##.##.##' from vCenter Server. The change has been rolled back.

Note: '##.##.##.##' refers to the IP address of the upgraded host you are attempting to add to the new vCenter. This IP address will be specific to your environment.

  • You are migrating hosts from one vCenter to another.
  • You are utilizing distributed virtual switches (vDS)
  • Your host does not contain any VMs

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi
VMware vCenter Server

Cause

The pre-existing configuration of the host was incorrect, with no uplinks configured on the host, which would result in disconnection.

Resolution

Add an Uplink to the host per your documented network design or identify the correct configuration by reviewing a reference host.

If the host does not have an VM workloads, you may rebuild the host in order to start fresh. Using your documented configurations, you may re-configure the host, or, if you do not have your environment documented, you may refer to a reference host in the same cluster for the configurations.
