Issue/Introduction

This article outlines the process of resetting advanced settings on ESXi to default values using CLI.

Environment

vSphere ESXi, all versions

Resolution

In order to revert ESXi advanced setting to its default value:

1. Log into ESXi host as root using SSH

2. Run esxcfg-advcfg -d followed by /SectionName/OptionName of choice, example:

esxcfg-advcfg -d /LSOM/diskIoRetryFactor
diskIoRetryFactor reset to default
Value of diskIoRetryFactor is 2

NOTE: Values default for an ESXi build are always recommended, unless directed otherwise by Broadcom on a case per case basis.

Additional Information

If setting is misspelled or not yet introduced in the given release then running 'get' option will return:

esxcfg-advcfg -g /LSOM/thissettingdoesnotexistyet
Exception occurred: Unable to find option thissettingdoesnotexistyet

This operation does not have any effect on the host.
