Issue/Introduction

  • Forwarding Configuration for remote syslog in vCenter Server VAMI shows the connection status as "Unknown" for the UDP protocol

  • Log in to vCenter Server VAMI (https://<vCenter_FQDN:5480) and navigate to Syslog > SEND TEST MESSAGE, and selecting SEND produces a successful result.

On the remote syslog server, the reception of the test message is verified by searching for the string "This is a diagnostic syslog test message from vCenter Server."

  • The remote syslog server is receiving the latest logs from the vCenter Server Appliance.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 8.x

VMware vCenter Server 7.x

Cause

The "Unknown" connection status when using UDP indicates that the connectivity between the vCenter Server Appliance and the remote syslog server could not be verified, as UDP is a connectionless protocol.

Resolution

This is an expected behavior, and no corrective action is required for the vCenter Server Appliance if the remote syslog server is receiving the logs.
