Issue/Introduction

This article explains the VCF Health "vSAN fault domain maintenance state" health check and provides details on why it might report error state.

Environment

VMware vSAN 9.1

Resolution

Q: What does the vSAN Health - vSAN fault domain maintenance state health check do?

  • This check validates inconsistent fault domain maintenance states between hosts and fault domain.
  • There are 3 types of inconsistent states possible, listed below:
    1. The host runtime state is inconsistent when the host is marked as being in fault domain maintenance mode, but it is not actually in maintenance mode.
    2. The fault domain maintenance state is inconsistent between hosts and the fault domain.
    3. All hosts are in fault domain maintenance mode, but they did not enter fault domain maintenance in a single task.

Q: What does it mean when it is in an error state and how to fix?

  • If this check reports RED state, it means that the vSAN fault domain maintenance information is inconsistent between hosts and the fault domain, which may lead to data inconsistency.
  • Please follow the guideline as below to fix each of the inconsistent fault domain maintenance state issue(s).
    1. If the vSAN fault domain maintenance information is inconsistent between hosts and the fault domain, please navigate in vSphere UI to Cluster > Configure > vSAN > Fault Domains and exit vSAN fault domain maintenance mode for the problematic fault domain. Then wait for task completed. This action will bring all hosts in the fault domain out of maintenance mode while maintaining consistency. If users want hosts to remain in maintenance mode, re-enter vSAN fault domain maintenance mode to ensure consistency.
    2. If all hosts are in vSAN fault domain maintenance mode (host level) while the fault domain is not in vSAN fault domain maintenance mode (fault domain level), it indicates that the fault domain has lost the configuration due to unexpected errors. A "remediation" button is visible in vSphere UI at Cluster > Monitor > vSAN > Skyline Health >  "vSAN fault domain maintenance state" health check > TROUBLESHOOT which can be used to repair the vSAN fault domain maintenance mode (fault domain level) state.
