ESXi host fails to start with error: X64 Exception Type 0X0D - General Protection Exception

Issue/Introduction

ESXi host fails to boot. The following message appears in red text on the screen:

X64 Exception Type 0X0D - General Protection Exception 

Symptom: A General Protection Exception has occurred indicating that the program under execution has caused an access violation. 

Causes: This issue is typically a software or firmware issue and not indicative of a hardware problem.

ACTION: Reboot the server. If the issue persists, update the drivers and firmware of all devices including option cards. Ensure that the boot media, such as the Operating System or PXE Server, is properly configured and updated. If the issue still persists, contact support.

Cause

This issue is caused by a firmware (BIOS) error. 

Resolution

  1. Check the BIOS and hardware is listed as supported on our compatibility guide
  2. Ensure the BIOS is updated to the latest compatible version.
  3. If the above steps do not resolve the issue, engage the hardware vendor for further assistance.
