Issue/Introduction

VM Snapshot Consolidation Fails With Error "Timeout. An error occurred while consolidating disks: The operation failed. Consolidation failed for disk node"

Environment

vCenter Server

ESXi

Cause

A timeout is typically caused by an issue with the storage connection. This could be related to storage hardware, the network, or drivers on the host.

  • Entries similar to those below are found following the consolidation job in /var/run/log/vmkernel.log:
    • Failed SVMFSDSIoctlMoveData: Timeout
    • failed H:0x0 D:0x2 P:0x0 Valid sense data: 0x4 0x0 0x0
      • This entry explicitly defines a backing storage hardware failure

Resolution

First verify that the backing storage for the effect VM's datastore is healthy. If it is not, please engage your Storage Team or Storage Vendor for further assistance to address this issue.

If your backing storage is healthy, please open a case with Broadcom Support to troubleshoot further.
