Issue/Introduction

  • When upgrading an ESXi 6.7 host to ESXi 7.0 Update 1 or any later version (prior to 7.0 Update 3i), the host may fail with a Purple Screen of Diagnostic (PSOD) during the post-upgrade reboot.
The PSOD console displays the following error message:
    Failed modules
    /usr/lib/vmware/configmanager/upgrade/lib/postLoadStore/libupgradepsadeviceconfig.so
  • The target ESXi host's /etc/vmware/esx.conf contains a satpConfig entry for implicit_support/explicit_support, as shown below.
    /storage/plugin/NMP/device[#########]/satpConfig = "implicit_support=on; explicit_support=off;##############"

Environment

ESXi 6.7

ESXi 7.0

Cause

During the upgrade process, the implicit_support/explicit_support tokens are treated as invalid configuration options and an exception is thrown, resulting in a PSOD.

Resolution

This issue is fixed in ESXi 7.0 Update 3i and later.
Change the upgrade destination version to ESXi 7.0 Update 3i or later.
