Issue/Introduction

A customer attempting to configure an Image-Based Cluster in vCenter Server 8.x is unable to add NSX components to the cluster image using vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM). The issue occurs during the image configuration phase, where NSX components are expected to be included as part of the desired cluster image.

Environment

Cause

NSX 3.x is not compatible with vCenter Server / vSphere 8.x and therefore cannot be added to an image-based cluster running on vSphere 8.

This behavior is confirmed through:

  • Live issue verification with the customer, where NSX 3.x components were unavailable for selection in the cluster image.

  • The official VMware (Broadcom) Interoperability Matrix, which shows that NSX 3.x does not support vSphere 8.x.

Resolution

Resolution

To successfully configure an image-based cluster in vSphere 8.x with NSX integration:

  1. Upgrade NSX from version 3.x to NSX 4.x.

  2. Verify NSX 4.x compatibility with the deployed vCenter Server and ESXi versions using the Interoperability Matrix.

  3. After upgrading to NSX 4.x, recreate or reconfigure the image-based cluster in vCenter.

  4. Add the NSX 4.x components to the cluster image using vSphere Lifecycle Manager.

Once NSX 4.x is deployed, NSX components will be available for inclusion in the image-based cluster.

Additional Information

  • vCenter Server 8.x is incompatible with NSX 3.x.

  • Image-based clusters in vSphere 8.x require NSX 4.x for NSX component management through vLCM.

  • NSX 3.x components cannot be added to a vSphere 8 image-based cluster by design.

  • The interoperability matrix explicitly defines NSX 4.x as the minimum supported version for vSphere 8.x environments.
