VMware SDDC Manager

Issue/Introduction

When attempting to remove host(s) from SDDC Manager clusters, the Enter Maintenance Mode on ESXi Hosts tasks fails.  The error message may look like the following examples form different events on different systems:

  • Example of an unknown cause returned from the message in SDDC manager

Remediation Message:

Reference Token: ABC1239911

Cause:

  • Example where the cause is attributed to a a vSAN issue:

Environment

SDDC Manager 5.2.1, 5.2.2

vSphere 8.0u3

vCenter 8.0 U3c, 8.0 U3g

ESXi 8.0 U3b, 8.0 U3g

Cause

There is a time out on the SDDC manager task that will cause the SDDC manager task to show as failed if the task takes too long on the vCenter side. To find a deeper cause, investigate on the vSphere side if there are any issues in vCenter or on the specific ESXi host.

Resolution

Workaround:

Put hosts to be removed into maintenance mode manually in vCenter.  If host will enter maintenance mode, reboot ESXi host to be removed, then exit maintenance mode, and ensure that DRS is enabled for the cluster, then restart the SDDC task.
