Issue/Introduction

  • NSX Manager upgrade is failing at start_playbook step.

"Unexpected error while upgrading upgrade-unit: [MPP] Node upgrade failed : MP upgrade failed due to failed to start playbook: /image/VMware-NSX-unified- appliance-4.2.3.########/scripts/start_manager.py:12: DeprecationWarning: The distutils package is deprecated and slated for removal in Python 3.12. Use setuptools or check PEP 632 for potential alternatives from distutils.version import LooseVersion

  • From NSX UI > Upgrade view:

Environment

  • VMware NSX-T 4.2.3.X

Cause

  • Upgrade-coordinator logs showed failures related to the MP component upgrade status.
  • During the upgrade process, one of the NSX Managers failed to boot correctly because it was configured to boot from a non-existing CD/DVD drive.
  • When an NSX Manager attempts to boot from a non-existent CD/DVD device, the boot process fails. This prevents the Manager from coming online, causing the MP component to remain unavailable and leading to the upgrade playbook failure.

Resolution

  • Retry the failed upgrade task from the NSX-T UI.
  • If the retry attempt fails, please collect the NSX-T Manager support bundles from all nodes and open a case with Broadcom VCF Support for further investigation
