VMware Data Services Manager for VCF

Issue/Introduction

This KB lists down the steps that can be used when one wants to increase the size of a PostgreSQL database running on a DSM instance on the fly while the DB is running.

Environment

VMware Data Services Manager for VCF

Resolution

Follow the steps below to extend the virtual disk size of a database VM.

  1. In the left navigation pane, under Databases, click PostgresorMySQL, depending on the type of database you want to manage.
  2. Examine the databases listed in the table, identify the database whose resource properties you wish to update, and navigate to that table row.
  3. Click the database instance name. The database information Summary tab displays.
  4. Click the Edit button in the Infrastructure section, and set or update the Disk Size properties in the Edit Infrastructure dialog box.

    Additional Information

    • Before extending the virtual disk of a database VM, ensure that the database VM has no snapshots. For more information, see the Finding and Listing Virtual Machine Snapshots and Managing Snapshots in vSphere Web Client knowledge base articles.
    • You can choose to extend the virtual disk size of a database VM when your data storage requirements for the service change. VMware Data Services Manager supports only extending the disk size. You cannot reduce the size of the virtual disk.
    • Extending the disk size is an on-demand operation. VMware Data Services Manager immediately initiates the task and performs the operation without any downtime to the database VM or the service.

By default, VMware Data Services Manager backs up the service before extending the virtual disk.
