Issue/Introduction

When adding a previously decommissioned host to a new vSAN Cluster preexisting vSAN disk-groups show up as "locked"

Environment

VMware vSAN (All Version)

Cause

The vSAN Disk-groups had not been removed during the decommission process as stated in KB

Permanently Decommissioning a node from a vSAN Cluster

This step is critical in the decommissioning of a vSAN host and if it is missed, the disks-groups will remain on the hosts and attempt to mount as the host is added to a new vSAN cluster.  This will result in locked disks on the new cluster, as the disk-groups were created using data-at-rest encryption.

Resolution

Remove the vSAN partitions from each disk to allow for the new cluster to claim them.

1. If the host currently resides in the vsan cluster place it in to MM via no action and move it to the data center lvl.

2. Identify all disk in use by vsan using the vdq -iH command.

3. Follow Erase ESXi Storage Devices and erase the vSAN partitions on the disks identified in use by vSAN on the  decommissioned host.

4. Drag the host back in to the new vSAN cluster and claim the disks.
