Issue/Introduction

Some VMs are not reachable when connected to certain VLANs on an ESXi host using a Standard vSwitch.

This could be on a newly provisioned ESXi host or a newly provisioned physical NIC on an existing ESXi host.

Environment

VMware ESXi

Cause

If the VM is connected to a Standard vSwitch (eg vSwitch0 or vSwitch1 or vSwitch2) and it's portgroup has a VLAN tag assigned, then the issue is likely in the physical switchport configuration.

Resolution

Identify the physical NICs used as uplinks for the vSwitch (eg vmnic0 or vmnic1).

In the vSphere Client, select the affected ESXi host, and then click on "Configuration" on the right, then click Physical Adapters. For each physical adapter used as the uplink for the affected vSwitch, click on the CDP tab and identify the switchport on the physical switch that it's connected to.

Provide this switchport and the required VLAN to your physical networking team, and ask them to ensure that the switchport is correctly configured as a trunk port with this VLAN listed amonst the allowed VLANs on that switchport. Once this is done, the affected VM should be reachable.
