Issue/Introduction

Log Insight agent does not start on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8.10 after installing recent OS updates. Attempts to uninstall and reinstall the Log Insight agent (version 8.18.4) do not resolve the issue — the agent still fails to start.

Environment

Aria Operations for Logs 8.x

Cause

Log Insight agent fails to start on RHEL 8.10 when the agent was installed manually at 8.18.4 after OS updates. If the agent is allowed to auto-update to 8.18 from a prior compatible version, the agent starts and functions correctly.

Resolution

Follow these options in order. The first option is the recommended approach.

1. Recommended — Allow agent auto-update to 8.18 (preferred if customer policy permits)

  • If the environment policy permits automatic updates, enable the agent auto‑update mechanism so the agent can update itself to 8.18. Agents that auto‑update to 8.18 have been observed to start and run correctly on RHEL 8.10 after the OS updates.

2. If auto-updates are not allowed — avoid manual installation of 8.18 on RHEL 8.10

  • Do not manually install agent version 8.18.0 (or 8.18.x) on RHEL 8.10, as manual installs of 8.18 have been observed to fail to start. Instead consider one of the following temporary alternatives until an approved manual-install procedure or patch is available:

    • Reinstall the last known working agent version that is supported on RHEL 8.10 in your environment (if available in your package repository or internal repo).
    • Revert the OS update (if acceptable and supported by customer policy) to restore the prior working state where the agent started successfully.
    • Allow a test host to auto-update the agent to 8.18 and confirm behavior before enabling auto-updates broadly.
