ERROR: "[error while bootstrapping the machine[.../EPHEMERA-TEMP-VM]; unable to wait post customization" when creating a CSE Cluster

Issue/Introduction

• The following error is observed when creating a Container Service Extension Cluster (CSE) in VMware Cloud Director (VCD):
  • [error while bootstrapping the machine[.../EPHEMERA-TEMP-VM]; unable to wait post customization
• CSE cluster failing to create.
• CSE Cluster creation attempt taking a long time approx. 40-50 mins.
• Using default TKG-Small placement policy.
• rde-projector pod status shows failed and is not being ready in time with the below error in Ephemeral VM cloud-final.err log:
  • vmtoolsd --cmd 'info-set guestinfo.cloudinit.target.cluster.install.rde.projector.status failed'

Environment

• VMware Cloud Director 10.6.1
• Container Service Extension 4.2.2

Cause

TKG-Small placement policy is small for this deployment resulting in slow Image Download and services not being ready in time.

Resolution

Increase the resources for the control-plane nodes by leveraging one of the larger VMware Cloud Director Container Service Extension Server Prerequisites
