Issue/Introduction

This article provides steps to re-register a Virtual Machine on another ESXi host without changing its inventory ID (MoRef ID).

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 7.x
VMware vCenter Server 7.x
VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x
VMware vCenter Server 8.x

Resolution

Virtual Machine is registered to the target ESXi host on vSphere Client and the inventory ID (MoRef ID) does not change.

  1. Check the Virtual Machine is powered off
For more information, see Determine the power status of a virtual machine on an ESX or ESXi Host
  2. Log in to VMware Host Client of the target ESXi host
  3. "Storage" > "Datastore browser" and click <datastore>
  4. Locate the correct directory for the Virtual Machine and click it to open the folder
  5. Locate the Virtual Machine.vmx file and right-click it
  6. Click "Register VM"

Note:

If registration of a Virtual Machine fails, check whether it is locked.
