Issue/Introduction

In VCF9 there are a number of situations that may require the vSAN datastore to be renamed.

Environment

vSAN 9.0
VCF9

Cause

VCF9 with vSAN has set steps for creating a vSAN datastore with a select name, or renaming the datastore after deployment.

Resolution

Scenario 1: vSAN datastore name change during initial deployment of a new fleet instance

The process of defining a custom vSAN datastore name is documented as part of the VCF 9
documentation Start a New VCF Fleet or a New VCF Instance Deployment by Using the VCF Installer Deployment Wizard under Step 10 where you can "Enter a name for the vSAN datastore
or use a pre-populated name” as we can see below

Scenario 2: vSAN datastore name change, post deployment of the VCF fleet instance

Change the vSAN datastore name via the vCenter GUI after VCF Installer is complete is documented in KB Changing the name of the vSAN datastore. and can be done with the following steps:

  1. In vCenter under the datastore inventory,  Select the name of the storage cluster datastore > right click > rename
  2. Enter the name of your vSAN datastore and select OK

Scenario 3: vSAN datastore name change, pre-deployment or during deployment of a VCF workload domain (WLD) via the GUI
There is no method to change the vSAN datastore name via the GUI installation in VCF Operations when deploying a new workload domain (WLD). You will need to follow Scenario 2 once the VCF
workload domain (WLD) has been fully deployed
