Issue/Introduction

The NSX Manager appliance becomes inaccessible using the root account because:

  • The root password has expired.

  • The previously configured password is unknown.

  • GRUB-based password recovery cannot be performed due to a non-default GRUB password.

As a result, administrators are unable to authenticate to the NSX Manager UI or SSH.

Environment

VMware NSX

Cause

Root password expiration combined with the loss of the previously configured password prevents successful authentication. GRUB-assisted password recovery is the standard approach; however, if the GRUB password has been changed and is unknown, an alternate recovery method must be used.
