Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • SDRS tried to migrate VMs with shared disks

  • Caused event with "A fatal internal error occurred. She the virtual machine's log for more details. Failed to start the SvMotion. Error during dis setup."

  • The events can be seen under the Recent Tasks

Environment

ESX  9.x
ESXi 8.x

Cause

VMs configured in a cluster with shared disks utilizing the multi-writer flag or SCSI Bus Sharing do not support live Storage vMotion. However, DRS may automatically initiate a Storage vMotion during periods of resource contention or to rebalance the workload. Consequently, these event are generated when DRS attempts migration.

Resolution

Implementing Storage DRS (SDRS) VM Overrides will mitigate the issue.

Steps to configure VM Overrides:

  • Login to vSphere UI > Select Cluster > Configure > VM Overrides > ADD

  • Select VM / VMs > click Next

  • Configure the override > click Finish
