General Installer Error Message when Installing the CAClarityAddin

When attempting to install the CAClarityAddin, a general installer error is thrown and the addin component does not install.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Login to Clarity

2. Go to Home > Account Settings > Software Downloads tab

3. Click on either of the two Download links to download the Microsoft Project Interface

4. Run the executible file and click through download and installation windows

5. The MSP Interface installs without an issue.

6. The CAClarityAddin component follows.

Expected Results: The addin installs without an error.

Actual Results: The addin does not install and throws the following error:

"The following Microsoft office solution cannot be installed due to a general installer error: CAClarityADDIn.vsto




This is a known Microsoft error code as referenced in the following Microsoft KB:

The error is caused because of temporary update files used by Windows. 

In order to be able to successfully install the Addin, complete the following steps:

  1. Login to your Windows system as an administrator
  2. Open a command prompt and execute the command 'services.msc'
  3. On the services windows opened, locate the service 'Windows Update'
  4. Right click on the service name and select 'Stop' from menu to stop the service
  5. Next, open 'My Computer' and navigate to 'C:\Windows' folder 
  6. Find and right click on 'SoftwareDistribution' folder and choose 'Rename'
  7. Rename the 'SoftwareDistribution' folder to 'SoftwareDistributionOLD' 
  8. Select 'YES' to UAC warning 
  9. Open Services window again and start 'Windows Update' service
