VM showing in 'Unknown' status and error 'The requested operation could not be executed on VM<VM_Name>. Stop the VM and try again 'while trying to delete them.

Issue/Introduction

  • The VM or its associated vApp might show an 'Unknown' status in the vCD UI.
  • Attempts to delete the VM is failing with an error.
  • The system is displaying an immediate error message/banner without generating a corresponding task.
  • Unable to import VM from vCenter with same name.

 

Environment

VMware Cloud Director 10.6.x

Cause

The vApp is still in powered-on and needs to be powered off before VM deletion.

Resolution

To resolve the issue, perform the following sequence of actions in the vCD UI:

  1. Stop the affected vApp.
  2. Delete the VM from within the vApp.
  3. Delete the vApp entity entirely from All Actions>>Delete(if required).
