Issue/Introduction

  • Unable to Upgrade Clusters via SDDC Manager UI
  • The "Upgrade" tab in SDDC Manager displays a Red Banner error "Could not find the cluster resource details for the domain id #######-####-####-####-########## Reference token: #####", and the "Next" button is greyed out (disabled).

  • The /var/log/vmware/vcf/lcm/lcm.log reveal a failure to fetch cluster details and a ServiceUnavailable exception when communicating with the Hardware Support Manager.

YYYY-MM-DDT02:08:06.939+0000 ERROR [vcf_lcm...] [HardwareSupportClientImpl] Unable to fetch the cluster upgradable details for the domain #######-####-####-####-########## from the previous cache

       defaultMessage = Service unavailable.

Environment

SDDC 5.2.x

vCenter Server 8.x

Cause

The issue was caused by the VMware Update Manager service (vmware-updatemgr) being in a STOPPED state on the target vCenter Server.

  • SDDC Manager requires this service to be running to fetch "Cluster Upgradable Details" and validate hardware support status via the vCenter APIs.

  • Because the service was unavailable, SDDC Manager could not retrieve the necessary resource details, resulting in the "Service Unavailable" error in the logs and the disabled "Next" button in the UI.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, manually start the Update Manager service on the vCenter Server.

  1. SSH into the affected vCenter Server Appliance as root.

  2. Check the status of the Update Manager service:

    service-control --status vmware-updatemgr

    (Expected output: Stopped)

  3. Start the service:

    service-control --start vmware-updatemgr

  4. Verify the service is running:

    service-control --status vmware-updatemgr

    (Expected output: Running)

  5. Retry: Log back into the SDDC Manager UI. The error banner should be gone, and the "Next" button should now be enabled.

  6. Initiate the upgrade task again.
