Issue/Introduction

  • The NSX upgrade fails for the ESXi Hosts enabled with a vLCM cluster with the following error: "Upgrade failed: Virtual-machine located on host reported an issue which prevents entering maintenance mode"

Environment

VMware NSX

Cause

  • A running virtual machine reported an error that stopped vSphere DRS from successfully putting the ESXi host in maintenance mode, which prevented the NSX update from starting on the ESXi host.

Note: If DRS is in the 'Manual' or 'Semiautomated' mode, vCenter will not automatically move the VMs, triggering an error.

Resolution

  1. Identify the specific VM(s) reported in the vCenter Tasks/Events.
  2. Manually migrate those VMs to another host in the cluster.
  3. Manually place the ESXi host into Maintenance Mode from vCenter.
  4. Return to the NSX Manager UI and select Retry for the failed host upgrade.
