When attempting to perform an upgrade of a VCSA, you receive the following error message:
"Internal error occurs during pre-upgrade checks."
VMware vCenter 7.x
VMware vCenter 8.x
This issue may occur due to a back-in-time upgrade scenario where the VCSA build number is higher than the version you're attempting to upgrade to.
An example of this can be seen below by observing the build numbers:
vCenter Server 7.0 Update 3w - 7.0.3.02500 - Build 24927011
vCenter Server 8.0 Update 3g - 8.0.3.00600 - Build 24853646
The existing VCSA is at build 24927011, which is higher than 8.x build 24853646 that's being attempted to upgrade to.
Check the release notes of your existing version of vCenter Server to see if there are any known limitations in the "Upgrade Notes" section prior to applying it, that may impact your current upgrade plans.
You may need to wait until a newer target version of the VCSA is released before you're able to upgrade.
Note: You cannot use file based backups to restore directly to a different version of the VCSA. File based backups need to use the exact version/build number that created them.
