vMotion failing with error - "Failed waiting for data. Error 195887167. Connection closed by remote host, possibly due to timeout"

Issue/Introduction

• vmotion fails with the error - "Failed waiting for data. Error 195887167. Connection closed by remote host, possibly due to timeout"

 

• vmotion is stuck at 22% post which it fails with the above error.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server

VMware vSphere ESXi

Cause

• Multiple vMotion VMkernel adapters are present across different network subnets (e.g., two VMkernels in Subnet A and two in Subnet B).
• A default gateway is missing or incorrectly configured on one or more of the subnets used for vMotion traffic causing vmotion to fail.

Resolution

• Verify and configure the default gateway for the subnet(s) associated with the vMotion VMkernel adapters. This is critical for enabling inter-subnet communication if vmotion is enabled on multiple vmkernel adapters.
• However, it is best practice to have only one vmkernel for vmotion on each host.
