Issue/Introduction

Following error is received when VMkernel adapter is created

"The specified address for default gateway is in different subnet than the IP address of the VMkernel adapter. Sepcify an address in the same subnet"

Environment

vSphere ESX

Cause

The issue happens when option "Override the deafult gateway for this adapter" is checked

Resolution

Each TCP/IP stack on a host can have only one default gateway. This default gateway is part of the routing table and all services that operate on the TCP/IP stack use it.

To override the default gateway for a VMkernel adapter, you must configure a specific gateway for the vSphere vMotion service itself. The key requirement is that the vMotion gateway's IP address must be within the same IP subnet as the vMotion adapter's IP address.
