VMware vCenter Server

Issue/Introduction

vCenter upgrade failing: Failed to delete the target appliance. Manually delete VM vCenter Server

Environment

vCenter Server 8u3g

Cause

For this specific error the temporary VM for the vCenter update was never created due to update validation failure so naturally if it never existed it can't be removed.

Resolution

Once the upgrade is successful the vm will automatically delete itself. In the event the failed target appliance does not delete complete the following:

  1. Access the vSphere Client connected to the ESXi host where the target vCenter Server 8u3g VM was deployed.
  2. Locate the virtual machine named "vCenter Server 8u3g" or a similar name indicating the failed upgrade attempt.
  3. Power off: the target vCenter Server 8u3g VM if it is still running.
  4. Delete: the virtual machine from disk. This removes all associated files and configurations related to the failed deployment.
