Issue/Introduction

When attempting to run the VMware vCenter Server Appliance on a Microsoft Hyper-V environment, or after migrating the vCenter Server Appliance from Hyper-V to a VMware vSphere environment using third-party backup or migration solutions, the virtual machine may fail to boot or experience network connectivity issues.

Cause

The vCenter Server Appliance is a pre-configured virtual machine optimized for running vCenter Server and its components specifically on VMware ESXi. It is designed to be deployed directly onto an ESXi host or a vCenter Server instance.

Running the vCenter Server Appliance on Microsoft Hyper-V, or migrating it from a Hyper-V environment, is not a validated configuration. The underlying architectural differences and virtual hardware dependencies are not compatible with third-party hypervisors.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, you must deploy a new vCenter Server Appliance on an ESXi host or vCenter Server instance. Running vCenter Server on Hyper-V, or migrating or converting an existing vCenter Server Appliance from a Hyper-V environment to a vSphere / VCF environment, can cause the environment to become unstable or stop functioning.
