Issue/Introduction

HCX Appliance and/or virtual vSAN Witness nodes are in the environment.

The following error is observed in the resource-aggregator.log on the SDDC Manager.

/var/log/vmware/vcf/operationsmanager/resource-aggregator.log

2025-10-20T18:40:25.021+0000 ERROR [vcf_om,68f682176b94a53badff28925aa544c6,9b0e] [c.v.v.r.s.u.v.c.ManagedResourceMetricsCacheHelper,ra-exec-3] Failed to fetch resource metrics from vCenter ##########.######.###
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Patch level can't be null
        at com.vmware.evo.sddc.common.version.EsxFullVersionUtils.extractPatchLevel(EsxFullVersionUtils.java:83)

Environment

VMware Cloud Foundation 9.0
VMware Cloud Foundation 9.0.1

Cause

SDDC Manager is expecting the hosts in the vCenter inventory to return a value for "Patch level"

vSAN Witness Nodes and HCX Mobility Agent ESXi Host do not return these values as they are virtual hosts.

Resolution

VCF Engineering is aware of the issue and is working on fixing the issue in a future release.

Workaround#1

Perform the Host Add operation or Cluster Creation operation from the SDDC Manager UI directly.

Workaround#2

  1. Remove the HCX Mobility Agent ESXi Host from the vCenter inventory

  2. SSH into the SDDC Manager with vcf and then elevate to root with su.

  3. Cycle the SDDC Manager operationsmanager service

    systemctl restart operationsmanager
