Issue/Introduction

The VM performance will degrade on follow scenario:

  • An invalid or blank DVD insert on the ESXi host
  • The DVD driver was configure as a host device on virtual machines

Environment

VMware ESXi 8.0

Cause

If a blank or incompatible disc is in the DVD drive of an ESXi host, the ESXi HPP module checks for the SCSI sense key and additional sense keys to determine next steps.

Due to a missing check to handle Active State Change (ASC) codes 0x30 and 0x3a, the check fails.

It causing a failover that keeps repeating.

As a result, the performance of virtual machines on the host was impacted.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in the VMware ESXi 8.0 Update 3e (Build 24674464)
