ESXi upgrade compatibility check fails due to mismatch in VMware Tools version

Issue/Introduction

During compatibility check for all ESXi host in a given cluster, the compliance shows comptibility issue for software component. The image shows information as below, wherein, we read VMware Tools Async Release version being of higher version than what is shown for Image version.

 

Due to this conflict, the compatibility fails with an error similar to

A general system error occurred: Solution specification in the image is incompatible with hosts <host01 fqdn>, <host02 fqdn>, .. etc

Environment

Cause

Issue occurs when VMware tools version has been manually upgraded to higher version.

Resolution

To address the conflict, either modify an existing image by adding components or create a new image adding the desired version of VMware Tools. To modify the Cluster image, follow the below mentioned steps.

  1. Navigate to vCenter Server and click on Cluster in the Inventory
  2. Select Updates to list the current image.
  3. Click on Edit and Click Add component
  4. Click on filter under Component Name and search for VMware Tools.
  5. Select the version corresponding to VMware Tools version to hold a match.
  6. Validate and click on Save.
