Issue/Introduction

Folders containing Simplified Chinese characters cannot be scanned in Symantec Endpoint Protection(SEP) Windows clients.

Files with name in Simplified Chinese when scanned manually (Right click the file> scan) fail to scan.

The manual scan for files and folders with names in 'Simplified Chinese' work successfully on System drive(where the Windows Operating System is installed).

Environment

SEP Windows Clients 14.x.x

Cause

The short names are by default enabled for C: drive(System Drive where the WindowsOperating System is installed) but disabled for other drives. This is the reason right click scan works fine if the file is present on the System drive and does not work on any other drives.

Resolution

  • Enable the shortname on drives other than the System drive.
Below is the command to enable the short name for all drives
fsutil 8dot3name set 0

Note: This solution will work for newly added files created after executing the above command

  • If it is not possible to enable the shortname then copy the files into directory (new or existing) and right click scan that directory.
