VMware NSX

Issue/Introduction

  • During NSX upgrade of ESXi host, there may be a time where manual uninstallation of NSX is needed.
  • Attempting to remove NSX vibs manually using 'del-nsx' seems to succeed and the user is presented with the message indicating to reboot the ESX host to proceed.
  • Once the host is rebooted, you still find the NSX vibs installed.
  • Attempting to run "del nsx" again results in the following error "NSX removal is not successful. Failed to remove the host switches. Please check opsagent logs for more details."

Environment

VMware NSX

Cause

  • During the 'del nsx' process, esxcli commands are executed in the background to remove nsx vibs.
  • This condition will occur if host reboot occurs before final esxcli vib removal command succeeds.

Resolution

  • Always verify the removal of NSX VIBs by running 'esxcli software vib list | grep nsx' PRIOR to rebooting the ESX host.
  • If VIBs are still present after "del nsx" reports the process as "completed" - please gather a screenshot or copy of the console text and create a SR with Broadcom Support.
