"You cannot downgrade the supported hardware version" error in VCD

Issue/Introduction

While updating the hardware version for the Provider VDC, encountering the following error:

“You cannot downgrade the supported hardware version.”

Environment

VMware Cloud Director

Resolution

To resolve this issue, update the default VM compatibility setting in vCenter and then reapply the hardware version update in vCloud Director. Follow the steps below:

1. Log in to vCenter.

2. Click to the Datacenter --> Edit default VM Compatibility.

3. Set the value to “Use cluster setting and host version.”

4. Save the changes.

After completing the above steps, proceed in vCloud Director (VCD):

1. Log in to the VCD Provider Portal.

2. Go to Provider VDC and select the PVDC.

3. Click on Edit.

4. Attempt to update the hardware version, and then click Save.

This allows the hardware version update to proceed successfully.
