Issue/Introduction

  • TEP traffic is sent with DF bit set so that fragmentation doesn't occur.
  • TEP Gateway may be configured to clear DF bit.
  • During packet captures of TEP traffic, under the TEP IP Header (the first IP header listed) you see the field changes

When Sent

When Received

  • Packet Captures on the destination (receiving) host will show the Geneve packet Fragmented

Environment

VMware NSX

Cause

When a host receives fragmented TEP traffic it will not reassemble the packet and fragmentations will be dropped.

Resolution

Fragmentation of TEP traffic is not supported and the full network path needs to be configured to the same MTU size as set in the NSX Fabric including the physical underlay.
