Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • VMs in a vSAN cluster display Inaccessible vSAN datastore from a decommissioned vSAN cluster.

  • The datastore view show that the vSAN datastore is not accessible.

Environment

VMware vSAN 7.x

VMware vSAN 8.x

Cause

The VMs exhibiting the inaccessible vSAN datastore retained the configuration reference (an attached ISO file under the CD/DVD drive) to the older, decommissioned vSAN datastore. This configuration prevents vCenter from automatically cleaning up the stale datastore entry and causes the stale vSAN datastore to be shown in the VM configuration.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, detach the ISO image that is currently mounted to the CD/DVD drive of the affected Virtual Machine(s).

  1. Edit the VM's settings .

  2. Navigate to the CD/DVD drive connection settings.

  3. Change the drive connection from "Datastore ISO File" (which points to the inaccessible vSAN datastore) to "Client Device" or simply select "None" (if available).

  4. Save the changes.

Once the ISO reference is detached from all affected VMs, the stale inaccessible vSAN datastore entry will be automatically removed from the VM configuration and from the main vCenter Datastores view.
